Guatemala City — By now, the path between Caracas and Nuevo Laredo, Bogota and Juarez, Cartagena and Matamoros, is well worn by many thousands of South American immigrants who have walked it. The path crosses at least a half dozen countries and connects two continents. Everyone knows the way.

It’s dangerous. But hunger drives people to take extreme risks.
